Does Modern China Truly Lack Vision?

‘We’ll later look at China, which has no shortage of energy and hope, yet surprisingly few ideas or dreams to share with the world, certainly by comparison with Mao’s time (outside China, few teenagers carry pictures of Xi Jinping).’ [1]

These words from Geoff Mulgan’s outstanding book, Another World Is Possible: How to Reignite Social and Political Imagination [1], reflect his view of modern China in comparison to the era of Mao Zedong. Mulgan seems to adopt a perspective (regardless of its objective validity) that portrays contemporary China, while possessing great energy and optimism about its development, does not produce as many new ideas or inspiring visions that resonate with the world as it did during the Maoist era. Overall, Mulgan emphasizes that although today’s China is dynamic, it no longer exerts the same ideological and cultural influence on global affairs as it did under Mao… [2]
